Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, espousing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), said on Friday that it is not natural for a man to have four wives.

Speaking at a media event, the Union minister sought to know if there is any Muslim country that has two civil codes.

He pointed out that when a man marries one woman, it is natural, but a man marrying four women is not natural. He observed that progressive and educated people among Muslims do not marry four women.

The Union minister clarified that the UCC is not against any particular region, but for the development of the nation and the benefit of the poor.

On Thursday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed similar sentiments saying the BJP is against men from the Muslim community having multiple wives.

"There cannot be any right to a man living in independent India to marry three-four women (without divorcing the previous spouse). We want to change such a system. We will have to work to give justice to Muslim women," the chief minister had said.
