West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday, defended renaming of a few Central schemes in Uttar Dinajpur district of the state, saying this was done due to language barriers in remote areas.

A few days ago, leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action against an IAS officer for renaming three central projects. Taking to Twitter, he had said, "I am astonished by this Order issued by the District Magistrate & Collector of Uttar Dinajpur district; Shri Arvind Kumar Mina (IAS). On whose behest he's renamed the Central Govt Schemes? Or he did so at his own discretion?"

The WB CM said, "Central projects are renamed due to language barriers in remote areas where people may not understand names given by Centre. In any case, Centre pays states through taxes collected from states. Still, even the due amounts are not duly given by Centre at regular intervals."

She also accused the media of spreading misinformation, and claimed that law and order situation in her state is good. "They (a section of media) begin media trials. In my state, we lodge complaints. In Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh they don't allow it. You must have seen journalists were naked so that they don't publish news, but in my state that doesn't happen," news agency ANI quoted her as saying.

She said if she sees something wrong with her party, she will order arrest and inquiry. She claimed that there is no truth in the complaints that the BJP made against her. " If it's true then I always say to publish it (in media)."
