Manipur’s Moirang, which has a historical significance, is gearing up for a special feat. The national flag will be unfurled atop India’s tallest flagpole to be installed in Moirang.

Moirang was the place where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Azad Hind Force made an entry into India after defeating the British forces and hoisted the tricolour on April 14, 1944. The war memorial at Moirang, however, is not well maintained despite its significance in the war against the British forces. It also houses a statue of Netaji which was vandalised years back by insurgents.

"I cannot forget Netaji come what may. I won't let Manipuris forget this legend of our freedom movement. So, I have brought the tallest pole and national flag from Gujarat. Its height would be around 153m," Chief Minister N. Biren Singh told THE WEEK. Singh said he would like Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah to hoist the flag.

The chief minister said he has also acquired few acres of land which were attacked by the Allied Forces during World War II. "I have acquired the land and house by giving Rs 1 crore compensation to the families. The area would be marked as a place to commemorate INA of Netaji. This would become a fitting tribute to the man in his 125th birth anniversary year," said Singh.

Modi will visit Manipur on Tuesday to inaugurate around 22 projects ahead of polls. The poll dates are yet to be announced.
