Three more cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 were confirmed in different parts of the country on Sunday, taking the total tally to 36.
Andhra Pradesh reported its first case of Omicron, with the state health department confirming the infection in a 34-year-old who had arrived from Ireland. The patient, who first landed in Mumbai, was tested and found negative for COVID-19. He was then allowed to travel onward to Visakhapatnam on November 27.
Officials said he tested positive in Vizianagaram and genome sequencing confirmed Omicron. The person, however, did not have any symptoms and a re-test on December 11 showed he was COVID-19 negative.
In Chandigarh, a 20-year-old male who came from Italy on November 22 tested positive for COVID-19 on December 1. He was subsequently found to be infected with Omicron. NDTV reported the patient in Chandigarh was fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine and had been asymptomatic. He is currently in institutional quarantine. This is the first case of Omicron in Chandigarh.
