Though he took one-year leave from the party on medical grounds, the real reason for his stepping down was believed to be the arrest of his son, Bineesh Kodiyeri, in a narcotics case in Bengaluru last year.
With Bineesh out on bail in the case and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan having regained health after prolonged medical treatment, the latter's return to the prime party post was expected.
A. Vijayaraghavan, the convener of the Left Democratic Front, had been officiating as party state secretary.
