There was alarm at the CBI headquarters in Delhi after a short circuit was detected following a leakage in the AC plant on Thursday. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the building was evacuated after smoke bellowed from the CBI headquarters, causing panic that a fire had broken out at the Central investigating agency where thousands of sensitive case files are stored.

“The AC plant in the basement was leaking, which resulted in a short circuit due to which there was smoke and the fire alarm system got activated in the building,” said a CBI spokesperson.

“There was no fire,” said the spokesperson, adding that electricity was being restored in the building.

The CBI has an inbuilt fire-fighting system and as the smoke triggered this system, the sprinklers were activated.

“We did not have to utilise the fire tenders so much as our own system worked alongside,” said the spokesperson.

The building had more than 200 officials and staff present at the headquarters, which was evacuated. CBI officials said no damage had taken place. The fire department, however, dispatched five fire tenders by that time giving statements that there had been a fire at the Central probe agency.

Even as the CBI managed to douse the smoke after the short circuit preventing a massive incident of damage to files or human life, simultaneously it was also busy dousing rumours of a fire.
