The Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association (KGMOA) has urged the government to impose complete lockdown for two weeks amid high COVID test positivity rate in the coastal state. The COVID situation in Kerala is extremely critical with an exponential rise in COVID patients over the past week, the doctors' body wrote to the Kerala government.
Kerala recorded 35,013 cases, pushing its infection tally to 14,95,377 on Wednesday. From just 11,000 to 13,000 cases a day last week, the COVID-19 graph in the state has spiked to 35,000 plus now. The test positivity rate is hovering near the 25 per cent mark on Wednesday. Hence, the imminent need to impose strict lockdown, KGMOA said in its letter addressed to the chief secretary.
It also urged the Pinarayi Vijayan government to deploy more health care professionals for the COVID fight to tackle the anticipated rise in cases. It also suggested that only serious COVID patients should be admitted to hospitals.

The letter emphasised that COVID infection transmits through aerosol particles and hence, people venturing out will drastically increase the chances of further spread.
The Indian Medical Association had also earlier urged the Kerala government to impose a total lockdown in the state. Currently, the state government has imposed night curfew between 9pm and 5 am from April 20.
States like Delhi, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Goa have announced total lockdown for two weeks to contain the virus, while partial restrictions and night curfew exist in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
