Record 67,468 COVID-19 cases, 568 deaths in Maharashtra; fresh curbs from tomorrow

Maharashtra registered another grim record with the state reporting the highest single-day spike of 67,468 and 568 deaths. With this, the state's caseload has crossed four million.

The death toll in the state now stands at 61,911. As many as 3,268,449 people have recovered so far. The state currently has 6,95,747 active cases.

With 10,852 cases and 35 deaths, Pune is the worst-affected city in Maharashtra, while Mumbai continued to register less than 8,000 cases. The city reported 7,654 new cases and 62 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The recovery rate in Maharashtra is 81.15 per cent.

In the wake of the surge in cases, the state government has come out with stricter curbs on Wednesday, which will come into effect from Thursday 8pm and will be in place till 7 pm on May 1.

Titled 'Break the Chain', the series of restrictions include 15 per cent attendance in private and government offices, which are not directly involved in managing the pandemic.

Offices which offer essential services have been asked to function at the lowest required capacity.

Not more than 25 people will be allowed at weddings. "The marriage ceremony may be conducted only as s single event in a single hall not extending beyond two hours," the government order read.

Private passenger transport, excluding buses, can ply only for emergency or essential services with driver plus 50 per cent of the seating capacity, the order read.

As to inter-city and inter-district travel ban, exemption will be made for travel for medical emergency, essential services, funeral or medical attendance, the government said.

Earlier, the Union health ministry said Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala cumulatively account for 60.86 per cent of India's total active cases.
