Goswami was arrested by a team of Alibaug police from his Lower Parel house for allegedly abetting suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer in 2018.
Meanwhile, according to a report by the Hindustan Times, an FIR was filed against Goswami and his wife for resisting the police officers who came to arrest him. The report said sections 353, 504, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been invoked in the new FIR that has been filed.
Goswami was produced before a court in Mumbai in the evening. His lawyer claimed that the journalist was assaulted by two police officials who went to arrest him at his residence.
Goswami’s arrest has sparked off a political uproar with the BJP leaders and Union ministers attacking the Maharashtra government and comparing the incident to the Emergency.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the attack on the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, saying the incident is a “blatant misuse of state power”.
“It reminds us of the Emergency. This attack on free press must be and WILL BE OPPOSED,” Amit Shah tweeted.
The Republic TV editor was at loggerheads with the state government over a slew of recent incidents including Sushan Singh Rajput case and TRP scam.
