Maharashtra reports more COVID-19 cases than fifth worst-hit country in the world

COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra continued its upward trajectory with the state reporting as many as 8,493 new cases on Monday. With this, the state crossed the six-lakh mark. Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally now stands 6,04,358.

The state has also recorded 20,265 deaths so far.

Maharashtra has now reported more number of cases than South Africa, which is the fifth worst-hit country in the world. According to https://www.worldometers.info, South Africa has 589,886 cases. The country is behind USA, Brazil, India and Russia in terms of the number of coronavirus cases.

While the US has recorded as many as 5,613,183 cases, Brazil, which is the second worst-hit country in the world, has reported 3,363,235 COVID-19 cases. India has 2,706,450 cases while Russia, which is the fourth worst-hit country, has 932,493 cases.

Maharashtra had crossed the five-lakh mark on August 8.

The state has also recorded as many as 11,391 recoveries in the past 24 hours. With this, the total number of people beating the pandemic has risen to 4,28,514.

Pune and Mumbai are the worst-affected cities in Maharashtra. On Monday, Pune overtook Mumbai in terms of caseload—the city now has 1.32 lakh cases, while Mumbai has 1,29,479 cases. However, in terms of death toll, Pune is behind Mumbai—the commercial capital of the country has so far recorded 7,173 deaths while Pune has reported only 3,247 deaths.

According to state health department, so far 32,06,248 people have been tested for the disease.
