Two of the three children of former president Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday dismissed claims the veteran politician had died. Pranab Mukherjee has been on ventilator support after he underwent a brain surgery at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi, where he was admitted on Monday.

Pranab Mukherjee announced he tested positive for COVID-19 that same day.

By 9am on Thursday morning, #ripPranabMukherjee was one of the top Twitter trends in India, with numerous social media users claiming the former president had died.

One of Pranab Mukherjee's two sons, Abhijit Mukherjee, took to Twitter to dismiss the claims. Abhijit had represented the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat twice on a Congress ticket.

Abhijeet tweeted, "My Father Shri Pranab Mukherjee is still alive & haemodynamically stable! Speculations & fake news being circulated by reputed Journalists on social media clearly reflects that Media in India has become a factory of Fake News."

Pranab Mukherjee's daughter, Sharmishta Mukherjee, who is also a Congress leader, took to Twitter. She wrote, "Rumours about my father is false. Request, esp’ly  to media, NOT to call me as I need to keep my phone free for any updates from the hospital..."

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Army Research and Referral Hospital said Pranab Mukherjee's condition remained unchanged.

“The condition of former President Pranab Mukherjee remains unchanged this morning. He is deeply comatose with stable vital parameters and continues to be on ventilatory support," the hospital was quoted as saying by ANI.
