Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the inaugural address at the Conclave on ‘Transformational Reforms in Higher Education under National Education Policy’ on Friday.

The prime minister said that the new National Education Policy will shift focus from a ‘what to think’ approach to one on ‘how to think’, and will help India shape its future.

The conclave, organised by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission (UGC), will discuss the new initiatives introduced under the NEP.

The NEP approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29 replaces the 34-year-old National Policy on Education framed in 1986. The NEP looks at paving the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems.

In his address, the prime minister emphasised that the education system needs to be based on discovery and analysis that help children learn. With a new global standard, it is important for India to change its education system. It is step in the right direction to move away from the 10+2 structure and accept the 5+3+3+4 structure.

Children are moving towards a herd mentality instead of being encouraged to follow the values of curiosity and imagination. Therefore, there haven’t been any major changes in the education system, he added.

The Indian education system focussed on ‘what to think’, but now the emphasis will shift to ‘how to think’, because of the NEP, Modi said.

The policy has proposed setting up of a “single overarching umbrella body for the entire higher education”.

The PM also said that we need to develop critical thinking and innovative thinking.

“It will be possible if we have purpose, philosophy, and passion of education,” Modi said.

He also highlighted the ‘dignity of teachers’ in the new policy, adding that there is a lot of stress on teacher training so that they continue to update their skills.

Modi further said that the NEP’s goal is to ensure that the youth of the country are ready for future challenges.

“Every country equates education to its national interest and moves forward. The goal is that the education system should keep the present and future generation future-ready,” he said.

Thanking Dr K. Kasturirangan for his contribution to formulate the NEP, Modi said that the suggestions of lakhs were taken into account during extensive discussions in the last 3-4 years.
