Exit polls predict AAP retaining power in Delhi, BJP to be distant second

Most of the pollsters predict a clean sweep for Kejriwal's party

With voting for the Delhi Assembly elections coming to an end, most of the exit polls on Saturday predicted a clean sweep for Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Admi Party while the Bharatiya Janata Party is predicted to be a distant second.

The News X-Neta poll gave the AAP 53-57 seats, the BJP 11-17 and the Congress 0-2 seats. The India News-Neta predicted 53-57 seats to the AAP and 11-17 seats to the BJP. It gave 0-2 seats for the Congress.

The Times Now-Ipsos survey predicted 44 seats to the AAP and 26 seats to the BJP. According to this poll, Congress would draw a blank in the elections.

The SudarshanNews poll predicted 40-45 seats for the Kejriwal's party. It gave 24-28 seats for the BJP and 0-2 seats for the Congress.

The Republic TV-Jan Ki Baat poll gave 48-61 seats to the AAP and 9-21 seats for the BJP. The Congress would win 0-1 seats, according to this pollster.

According to TV9Bharatvarsh-Cicero poll, the AAP is predicted to get 54 seats, the BJP 15 and the Congress one.

The exit polls predicted little improvement in the fortunes of the Congress which could not bag any seat in the 2015 polls. The AAP had scored an overwhelming victory in the 2015 polls, winning 67 seats and reducing the BJP to three.

Earlier, polling to the 70 assembly constituencies was held peacefully with 55 percent voter turnout recorded till 6 pm. The polling began at 8 am and ended at 6 pm. Counting of votes will take place on Tuesday. 

Over 1.47 crore people were eligible to exercise their franchise in the polls that would decide the fate of 672 candidates.

Prominent candidates in the fray include Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia, Atishi and Raghav Chadha of the AAP; four former mayors—Azad Singh, Yogender Chandolia, Ravinder Gupta and Khushi Ram—of the BJP; and Shivani Chopra, daughter of Delhi Congress president Subhash Chopra.

There are 13,750 polling booths, besides one auxiliary booth, located at 2,689 locations across Delhi.

The Aam Aadmi Party is hoping to repeat its stellar performance of the last assembly polls when it won 67 of the 70 seats. The BJP, which bagged all the seven seats in Delhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll, is aiming to dislodge the AAP, while the Congress is seeking to better its performance than last time when it drew a blank in the assembly polls.

The AAP had got 54.3 per cent votes in the 2015 polls, while the BJP secured 32 per cent and the Congress bagged just 9.6 per cent.
