Rahul in Guwahati

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi will hold a rally in Guwahati on Saturday to show solidarity with those protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam. The rally will be held in the Khanapara area and would begin at 11am. Rahul Gandhi is expected to address the meeting around 1pm.

Rahul is also expected to visit the kin of two protesters who had died during demonstrations against the Citizenship Act.

Congress Foundation Day rallies

The Congress is organising rallies across the country on Saturday to mark its 134th Foundation Day. The rallies will be on the theme of 'Save Constitution, Save India', resonating with the ongoing protests against the Citizenship Act.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will unfurl the party flag at the AICC headquarters in Delhi on Saturday morning to mark the occasion. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will address party workers at Lucknow at a meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Pradesh Congress Committee. The Congress had planned a peace march from its headquarters in Lucknow to the Ambedkar statue opposite GPO Park, but it may not take place in view of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.

VHP meetings in Mangaluru

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad is holding two meetings in Mangaluru until December 29. The VHP's Prabandh Samiti meeting and Pranyasi Mandal Baithak had started on Friday.

The VHP will discuss issues such as the planned Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Citizenship Act and women's safety. The meetings come a week after Mangaluru witnessed violent protests against the Citizenship Act, which left two people dead.

Sitharaman to meet heads of PSU banks

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to meet on Saturday heads of public sector banks to discuss measures to prop up the flagging economy. She will also review budget announcements on absorption of Merchant Discount Rate charges by banks and overdraft facility to PM Jan Dhan Yojana account holders through RuPay debit Card.

The meeting is expected to take stock of the banking sector and pushing loan growth. The banks may be nudged to further cut interest rates.

Mary Kom, Nikhat Zareen to clash for berth in Olympic Qualifiers

Six-time world champion M.C. Mary Kom will face off in Delhi on Saturday against Nikhat Zareen in the 51kg category of the women's boxing trials for the Olympic Qualifiers next year.

Former junior world champion Zareen defeated reigning national champion Jyoti Gulia, while multiple-time Asian champion Mary Kom got the better of Ritu Grewal. The Olympic qualifiers are scheduled to be held in China in February next year.
