The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) suffered a setback on Monday when nearly 20,000 employees called for an indefinite strike, stating the unions' demands, including wage revision.

Nine units of HAL across the country will go ahead with the planned strike on Monday after the meeting between the coordination committee of All India HAL Trade Unions and the HAL management failed to reach a consensus, reports said.

The All India HAL Trade Unions' Co-ordination Committee (AIHALTUCC) said the decision to launch the strike was taken at a meeting held under the chairmanship of the Committee chief convenor Suryadevara Chandrasekhar.

Chandrasekhar had said on Sunday that the strike will go ahead as per the notice served on September 30, and that all members have been asked to participate in the strike with regard to settlement of wage revision effective from January 1, 2017.

The management, however, said it was making “all out efforts” to avert the strike.

“Despite the management's concerted efforts towards bringing an amicable/early wage settlement, unions unfortunately have adopted a recalcitrant approach and did not accept the offer and decided to resort to indefinite strike; in spite of management's appeal not to resort to an indefinite strike and resolve the issue in a spirit of accommodation,” HAL said.

The wage negotiation committee also apprised the unions the ill-effects of resorting to any strike jeopardising the interest of the employees and organisation and the nation at large, it added.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has five production complexes in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Koraput in Odisha, Lucknow and Nashik in Maharashtra and four research and development (R&D) centres across the country.
