Former Union finance minister Chidambaram, who is lodged in Tihar Jail since August 21 in connection with the INX Media corruption case, was reportedly referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after he complained of stomach pain on Saturday.

The senior Congress leader will undergo medical check-up at the hospital, reports ANI. He, however, hasn't been admitted to the hospital.

According to a News18 report, usually, the inmates of Tihar are referred to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital if they suffer from any ailments. However, according to a court order, Chidambaram should be referred to AIIMS, RML hospital or Safdarjung hospital in case he complains of any medical problems.

Earlier, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, had told the Delhi court that the 74-year-old Congress leader was suffering from multiple ailments, including dyslipidemia and irritable bowel disease. Sibal said there was a noticeable loss in Chidambaram's weight and his health was deteriorating in jail.

On Friday, Chidambaram had moved the top court, challenging the September 30 verdict of the Delhi High Court which had dismissed his plea seeking bail in the case.

The Congress leader was taken into custody after the CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the FIPB clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram's tenure as finance minister. Thereafter, the ED lodged a money laundering case in this regard in 2017.
