A day after she addressed a special session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Congress MLA Aditi Singh is facing the ire of her party peers in Rae Bareli.

Angry workers accused Aditi of being an embarrassment to the party, amid speculation that she might join the ruling BJP. Her house in Rae Bareli was surrounded by local Congress workers who shouted: 'resign, resign'.

Aditi, who represents Rae Bareli Sadar seat, had defied her party's decision to boycott the special 36-hour long session convened to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Her attendance gains further significance as she did not attend Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi's march in Lucknow on October 2.

On Friday, the protesting workers held aloft banners which urged the MLA to either end her cosying up to the government or resign. They chanted, 'Traitors of the party should resign'.

Aditi had not only attended the assembly session, but also expressed her gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the development of her constituency. A day later, she was given Y-plus security by the state government.

Addressing a joint session of the House on Thursday night, Adityanath thanked the opposition members who participated in the marathon session and also named Aditi while accusing the opposition of 'betraying' the people of the state. The Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party had also boycotted the session.

Rae Bareli is the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi. As the only parliament seat with the Congress in the state, it holds immense political and symbolic significance for the party.

Till very recently, Aditi was highly critical of the state government over a host of issues including the accident of Unnao rape survivor.
