BJP chief Amit Shah appointed Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Jaiswal as the new Bihar state party president. Rajasthan MLA Satish Poonia has been appointed as new state BJP president.

Jaiswal is a three-time MP from West Champaran seat. He is also the chief whip for the party in Lok Sabha. Jaiswal replaces MP Nityanand Rai as state president. Rai had shifted to union cabinet as minister of state for home affairs. Jaiswal comes from a political family. His father was also an MP.

Poonia has been appointed as Rajasthan state president. He will replace Madanlal Saini, who passed away recently. He represents Amer assembly seat. He belongs to the Jat community and comes with an RSS background. He was also state BJP general secretary.

With his appointment, the BJP has kept in mind the caste calculations as the Jat community was said to be not very happy with the party.

The BJP has accommodated various Jat leaders from different states with key positions. There are currently two state governors —J&K and West Bengal— who belong to the Jat community, apart from representation in the union cabinet.

Shah also appointed Ajay Kumar as Uttarkhand state party general secretary. This post is a key position in party hierarchy as the appointee comes from the RSS.
