Agra: Bus falls into drain on Yamuna Expressway, 29 killed

A bus of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation fell into a drain in Agra on the Yamuna Expressway on Monday morning, killing at least 29 people and injuring several others.

The bus was travelling from Etawah to New Delhi. The Uttar Pradesh Police said the bus was a sleeper coach. According to early reports, the bus had around 50 people on board when the accident occurred. Police and local agencies reached the spot to rescue people trapped in the wreckage.

Unconfirmed reports claim the driver fell asleep, leading to the bus falling into a large drain around 50 feet down from the Yamuna Expressway.

The Uttar Pradesh Police tweeted the accident occurred near Kuberpur village. It added 27 bodies had been recovered and around 16 people had been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the victims killed in the accident.
