On the eve of elections in Amethi constituency, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is locked in a keen contest with BJP's Smriti Irani, on Friday made an appeal to the people of the traditional seat of the Gandhi family to yet again repose their faith in him.

Gandhi, in an open letter addressed to the people of his constituency, called Amethi his family. “My Amethi family gives me the courage to stand by truth, listen to the pain of the poor and the weak, raise their issues and take the pledge to bring justice to them,” he wrote. Amethi goes to polls on May 6.

Perhaps in an allusion to his decision to contest from a second seat in the Lok Sabha elections— Wayanad in Kerala—he said, “It is on the basis of the lesson of love that you have given me that I have been able to make an effort to join the entire country, from the north to the south, from the east to the west.”

Criticising the BJP government at the Centre, Gandhi said his fight involves taking up the concerns of the farmers, the youth, the poor, women, small shopkeepers, adding that the ideology of the BJP is that 15-20 industrialists be made the owners of the government.

“In the Congress system, the people are the rulers, whereas in the BJP's system, Anil Ambani is the ruler,” he said.

In an obvious reference to Irani's campaign in the constituency, he said, “The people of Amethi know that the BJP sets up a factory of lies here during elections and makes rivers of money flow. Perhaps those in the BJP do not know that the strength of Amethi is its truth, self-respect and simplicity.”

He pledged to restart all the work in Amethi, which he claimed was stopped by the BJP regime, as soon as a Congress government was formed at the Centre.

“On May 6, cast your votes in large numbers and yet again give strength to this member of your family,” he said, appealing for support from the people of Amethi.
