Congress working president from Kerala K. Sudhakaran tendered an apology on Thursday, a day after he made a sexist remark against women while criticising Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Sudhakaran, a former MP from Kannur, had sparked off a storm on Wednesday when he said the chief minister was “worse than women”.

“We all thought he will do something like a man but he proved beyond any doubt that he is worse than a woman,” Sudhakaran had said at a protest rally of the opposition United Democratic Front in Kasaragode. He also said the chief minister had no heart, while accusing him of sabotaging the flood relief fund.

The MP's remarks had triggered a controversy with many women activists and political opponents taking strong exception of his statement.

Sudhakaran said his statement was taken out of context and misinterpreted. “It was not meant to hurt anyone. If anybody is hurt I am really sorry for it,” he said.

It was not the first time the MP has landed in soup for his controversial comments. In October 2018, Sudhakaran, who has been leading party's protests against the government's decision to implement the Supreme Court verdict lifting ban on women aged between 10 and 50 in the Sabarimala temple, had called menstruation “impure”.
