In a heartwarming surprise, thousands of frontline workers received unexpected financial recognition worth AED 15 million (Rs 37 crore) for their efforts and dedication.
More than 8,500 employees who were gathered at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi for a leadership address by Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and CEO of Burjeel Holdings, were in for a pleasant surprise.
Midway through the address, the event took an emotional turn when frontline healthcare workers began receiving SMS notifications confirming their inclusion in the Group’s newly launched BurjeelProud recognition initiative. Employees who were included in this initiative would receive financial recognition, equivalent to approximately half a month to one month of basic salary, depending on role and category.

Officials mentioned that nearly 85 percent of the Group’s nursing, allied health, patient care, operations, and support workforce were covered in the first phase of the initiative.
“This is neither a reward for a department nor tied to conditions. This is not because you asked. This is because you are the people on the ground,” said Dr Shamsheer, emphasising that the initiative was not tied to any conditions.
The announcement made several employees teary-eyed, with many describing the initiative as a deeply personal acknowledgment of their daily efforts in delivering care.
“It was a real surprise. It felt like a moment for all of us on the frontline,” said a nurse after the event.
The initiative forms part of Burjeel Holdings’ next phase of growth, Burjeel 2.0, with a focus on execution, accountability, and people-led growth, as per the officials.
