The 75th annual Golden Globes awards will be held on January 7, and all eyes are on the event for a multitude of reasons. Besides a great line-up of films, the world is eager to see what will happen at the first major red carpet event after the Harvey Weinstein controversy snowballed. In a first of its kind sartorial protest at the awards, Hollywood actors and actresses have declared they will be dressed in black, opposing sexual harassment.
On any other day, the red carpet would have been a glitzy fashion event and a hey day for photographers and fashion enthusiasts—clicking pictures, analysing the gowns and suits worn by the who's who of Hollywood. This time, there is going to be a lot of black. After the women declared they will be dressed in black, men, too, followed suit. Stylist Ilaria Urbanati, who dresses Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tom Hiddleston, Garrett Hedlund, and Armie Hammer, said that “all her guys” will be wearing black, and encouraged others to do the same.
The protest is also part of a new movement—Time's Up—an initiative led by over 300 top Hollywood actresses, producers, writers and entertainment executives in the wake of the Weinstein scandal, and a slew of sexual assault allegations against big names in the industry. The initiative also includes a legal defence fund to help women protect themselves from sexual misconduct in the industry, and the fallout from reporting it. Apart from the black clothes, the hottest accessory on the red carpet at the Golden Globes will be the 'Time's Up pin'. This is expected to be worn by the leading ladies and men. The pin was designed by costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips, upon a request by actress Reese Witherspoon. Phillips teamed up with jewellery designer Michael Schmidt to design over 500 pins.
Some have, however, questioned how powerful a statement this could actually make because most men wear black to the awards anyway. But it will surely be interesting to see how the stars turn up. And not to miss some powerful speeches, given that the industry is going through a tense phase. Remember Meryl Streep's Oscar acceptance speech last year in which she slammed US President Donald Trump?
