Paramount Pictures is officially developing a live-action movie based on the popular video game "Cyberpunk 2077," marking a major step forward for the franchise, which has grown beyond gaming to become a successful entertainment brand.
The film follows earlier discussions about a live-action adaptation involving Anonymous Content, the company behind several award-winning films and television series, including "Spotlight", which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, "The Revenant", "True Detective", and "Mr Robot", among others.
Veteran Hollywood producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for producing the "Transformers" film franchise, is attached to the project. He will produce the movie alongside CD Projekt Red, the company behind the original game.
The film will take place in Night City, the dark, futuristic world of "Cyberpunk 2077". Known for its advanced technology, powerful corporations, and deep social inequality, the city is central to the game's identity.
However, the movie may not directly follow the story of V and Johnny Silverhand, the main characters of the game. The project is touted as a live-action film set in the "Cyberpunk 2077" universe, leaving room for a new story or a spin-off.
As of October 2026, the film is still in early development stages. No director, screenwriter, or cast members have been officially announced. Paramount Pictures has also not revealed a release date. And so, fans may have to wait several years before the movie reaches theatres. Bringing Night City's futuristic world to life will likely require extensive visual effects and detailed production work.
The upcoming film builds on the franchise's growing success, following the popularity of the Netflix anime series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" and the "Phantom Liberty" expansion.
