The trailer of ‘Daayra’ is out, bringing Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran together on screen for the first time. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the crime thriller follows the two actors as senior police officers caught on opposing sides of a case involving juvenile crime, raising difficult questions about law, justice and accountability.
Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj essays DCP Raman Kumar. Their intense first looks had already hinted at the serious nature of the project, and the trailer offers a closer look at the investigation that puts the two officers on opposite sides of the same system.
Described as being “inspired by true events,” ‘Daayra’ unfolds in the aftermath of a crime that grips the nation and sparks widespread outrage, setting multiple investigations in motion. As the search for answers deepens, Raman and Ajooni approach the same case differently. One appears to view the law in black and white, while the other looks for loopholes, setting up a tense clash over duty and justice.
The trailer centres on the aftermath of a young girl’s assault, allegedly involving a minor. The nature of the punishment becomes a source of conflict, particularly as the girl’s mother continues her relentless fight for justice. The story also raises questions about the legal framework surrounding juvenile offenders, including whether juvenile protection laws should apply in cases involving minors accused of serious crimes such as rape and murder.
The film’s official trailer description reads: “Inspired by true events, ‘Daayra’ is a gripping crime thriller that follows DCP Raman Kumar and DCP Ajooni Kohli as a case places them on opposing sides of the same system.”
The trailer also offers glimpses of the wider ensemble, including Jitendra Joshi, Kshitee Jog, Kanwaljeet Singh, Sandeep Kulkarni and Trupti Khamkar.
Written by Yash Keswani, Sima Agarwal and Meghna Gulzar, ‘Daayra’ marks Gulzar’s return to Junglee Pictures after ‘Talvar’ and ‘Raazi’. The film examines the difficult choices that emerge when personal conviction meets the boundaries of law. In an earlier interaction, lyricist Gulzar had also confirmed that the film has no songs.
‘Daayra’ is produced by Junglee Pictures and Dr Jayantilal Gada’s Pen Studios and distributed by Pen Marudhar. The film is set to release in cinemas on September 18, 2026.
