As we mourn the death of S. Janaki, 88, it is important to understand why the veteran playback singer refused to accept Padma Bhushan back in 2013. Often referred to as "Janaki amma", she was considered the "nightingale of South India".
During her almost-seven-decade career, Janaki sang for films, albums, television and radio in more than 20 languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and more. However, the singing legend felt that the national recognition came too late for her.
"I refuse the Padma award... I have been singing for the last 55 years. I consider the recognition of my fans in various languages as the highest award," she said back in 2013.
"I have no complaint towards the government. I don't think the government has done anything wrong. But I have decided to refuse Padma award," Janaki said referring to the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.
The veteran singer made her singing debut in 1957 Tamil film, Vidhiyin Vilayattu. She has won four National Film Awards and 33 different State Film Awards.
She died in Mysuru on July 11. Confirming her death, the singer's granddaughter Apsara Vydula posted on Instagram, "Dear everyone, It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of my beloved grandmother and legendary singer, Smt. S. Janaki. She left us peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. While our hearts are heavy, we are also filled with gratitude for the extraordinary life she lived and the immeasurable joy she brought to millions through her timeless music."
"To the world, she was an iconic voice whose songs became part of countless memories. To us, she was a loving grandmother whose warmth, humility, kindness, and grace will remain with us forever. We kindly request that you respect our family’s privacy during this difficult time as we grieve and come to terms with this loss. Thank you for your love, prayers, and understanding. Apsara Vydyula," she added.
