Netflix has officially released the trailer for "Below", a highly anticipated suspense thriller series starring Josh Hartnett. The six-part limited series will premiere globally on October 8, 2026, with all six episodes arriving at once. Before its Netflix debut, the series will have its world premiere as the Primetime Opening Night selection at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Set along the rugged and isolated coast of Newfoundland, Canada, "Below" follows Calvin Penney, played by Hartnett, a stubborn but kind-hearted local fisherman. Calvin has spent decades haunted by the mysterious death of his father. His difficult past comes back to the surface when an unidentified sea creature begins terrorising his small coastal community.
As the threat grows, Calvin must protect his family and fight to preserve a way of life that is slowly disappearing. He is also raising three children, and his responsibilities as a single father add another emotional layer to the story.
Calvin’s son Wade is played by Charlie Heaton, best known for "Stranger Things". Mackenzie Davis, known for "Station Eleven", plays Fonda Howander, a marine researcher who arrives in the area and joins Calvin in trying to understand the creature and why it has suddenly emerged.
The supporting cast includes Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell, Kaleb Horn and Willow Kean. Jesse McKeown, whose previous work includes "The Umbrella Academy" and "The Sinner", serves as creator and showrunner. The episodes are directed by Jamie Childs ("The Sandman"), Helen Shaver ("The Penguin") and Stephen Dunn ("Closet Monster").
The trailer sets a dark and unsettling mood, mixing local folklore, family drama and psychological horror. One ominous warning tells the townspeople that “the iceberg is not your friend,” suggesting that a much larger danger is hiding beneath the frozen surface.
Rather than releasing the episodes weekly, Netflix will make the entire six-part series available on October 8.
The production also aimed for realism by filming entirely on location in Newfoundland instead of relying heavily on green screens or sound stages. Filming took place between June and October 2025, with major scenes shot in coastal locations including Conception Harbour, Brigus South and Bacon Cove.
The crew also used practical effects to create the series’ eerie atmosphere. Production workers reportedly pumped artificial fog across the bays, while a full-sized prop house was submerged underwater for a month to achieve a realistic, decayed appearance.
Hartnett also spent months working with a dialect coach to master Newfoundland’s distinctive accent. Early praise for his performance suggests that the effort could help make "Below" one of Netflix’s most immersive thrillers of 2026.
