It's a known fact that in the past, several Indian movies have had an additional revenue boost when released in more international territories. Release plans in non-traditional territories usually happen months or even years after a film's domestic run. Because production costs are already fully recovered in India, almost all theatrical revenue generated in territories like Japan directly boosts the distributor and producer's net profits. Actor-producer Aamir Khan is credited with pioneering such breakthroughs in East Asia. Following the success of "3 Idiots", Japanese studios actively started purchasing distribution rights for his follow-up social dramas.

However, unlike blockbusters like, say, "Dangal" and "3 Idiots", Ranveer Singh's blockbuster "Dhurandhar" (and its follow-up "Dhurandhar: The Revenge") did not benefit from a release in certain international territories, like GCC, China, and Japan.

The actor has confirmed that the original, released in 2025, will be released on July 10 as initially planned, sharing a video message to that end for Japanese audiences.

The combined gross of the "Dhurandhar" film franchise currently stands at ₹3,200 crore+ (estimates) at the worldwide box office. The first "Dhurandhar" grossed Rs 1,354.84 crore globally (with Rs 1,056.62 crore from India and Rs 293.03 crore overseas). "Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge" earned roughly Rs 1,850.85 crore globally, concluding its theatrical run as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026 so far.

Also starring Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera and Danish Pandor in integral roles, the espionage thrillers were written and directed by Aditya Dhar, who co-produced them with Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar.
