"Now the release of Jana Nayagan will be celebrated in Tamil Nadu," read a tweet ar around 11 am on May 4. By then, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the party helmed by the star of the movie, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, was leading in more than 100 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

Yet, there is no official word on the status of "Thalapathy" Vijay’s magnum opus, Jana Nayagan. The movie has had setbacks one after the other, even prompting Congress supremo Rahul Gandhi to tweet back in January, "The I&B Ministry’s attempt to block ‘Jana Nayagan’ is an attack on Tamil culture."

Last month, after parts of Jana Nayagan were allegedly leaked, the South Indian Film Editor’s Association (SIFEA) temporarily suspended the editor of Jana Nayagan, pending investigation. Despite the body stating that Ragav was not "directly responsible" for leaking certain scenes from the film online, SIFEA insisted that the editor allegedly violated its rules by hiring "non-members as assistants on all the films he works on, including Jana Nayagan".

The piracy issue then seemed to be the final nail in the coffin for H. Vinoth’s Jana Nayagan, adding to the dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over delays in obtaining a censor certificate since last December.

In the second half of April, the Madras High Court also greenlit a plea for a probe into the alleged discrepancies of assets declared by TVK chief Vijay ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

None of these seems to have affected the sheer power of the Kaththi star, with the current trend hinting at TVK emerging as the single largest party. With that, the chances of Vijay becoming the Chief Minister of the state have increased. But if an absolute majority is not achieved, TVK might have to join hands with another party.

While many distributors of Jana Nayagan backed off after not getting concrete updates, industry analysts have estimated the losses to the movie to be above ₹300 crore. This was compounded due to the OTT deal withdrawals, piracy lead, and the uncertainty surrounding the movie's release.

But these analysts are also confident that the movie could be released after the elections, probably in May itself. If so, the movie—if it becomes a blockbuster—might comfortably make up its losses. Social media users seem to echo this.

"Jana Nayagan [has] gone through [a] tough release phase, but now they will have the last laugh," tweeted another popular media account. One user went on as much as to tweet, "Jana Nayagan was banned, so Vijay released the climax of the movie in reality."

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, KVN Productions might provide an update on the fate of Jana Nayagan.
