Actor Aaron Pierre ("Rebel Ridge") has joined the case of the "Superman" sequel headlined by David Corenswet and directed by James Gunn. "Superman: Man of Tomorrow" will see Pierre playing the Green Lantern John Stewart, after his first appearance in the upcoming DC/HBO series "Lanterns", the trailer for which was dropped recently.
In "Superman: Man of Tomorrow", Nicholas Hoult will return as Lex Luthor, while German actor Lars Eidinger has been cast as the principal antagonist Brainiac. It is set for release on July 9, 2027.
The project will follow "Lanterns". The most immediate DC Studios release is "Supergirl", starring Milly Alcock as the titular character, who showed up briefly in "Superman". It is slated for a June 26 release.
As for "Lanterns", it is expected to be the next big thing. James Gunn, co-CEO of the rebranded DC Studios, said a while back that they are going for a buddy-cop investigation drama in the vein of "True Detective", and the visuals presented in the trailer adhered to the makers' earlier claims. The two investigate a murder in a small town. It's quite the opposite of what one normally sees in a big-scale superhero extravaganza.
Created by Damon Lindelof ("Lost", "Watchmen"), the series, which is set to premiere on HBO MAX in August, also has the advantage of appealing to fans who prefer R-rated, long-form storytelling, similar to what James Gunn did with "Peacemaker".
