Anna Sawai recently broke out in a big way with her appearance as one of the crucial characters in FX's "Shogun" and Apple TV's "Pachinko". The New Zealand-born Japanese actress, who is also part of Apple TV's ongoing 'Monsterverse' series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters", confirmed in a new interview that she plays Yoko Ono in the upcoming four-part Beatles biopic movie project, directed by acclaimed director Sam Mendes, that simultaneously follows the journey of each member.
Ahead of the release of the second season of "Monarch", Sawai spoke to PEOPLE about her Yoko Ono portrayal. “It's just exciting because [Ono’s] story is so inspirational to me, and people really don't know the true person that she was,” she said. “She's an incredible artist. And also, she just was an independent woman, and people didn't like that. They wanted John [Lennon] for themselves, and she was an easy target. And I think it's very meaningful for me to be able to tell her story.”
As for her incredible rise in showbiz within a short span, she shared that the journey has been "like a dream."
"It's everything that I wanted to do, and I get to tell the stories that are so meaningful to me,” she added. “When I look back to a couple of years ago, I was auditioning and just taking on the roles that I would get offered after auditioning. But now I have choices that I can make, and so I feel very, very lucky.”
"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" Season 2 will begin streaming on Apple TV from Feb. 27.
