From video game to silver screen: Jason Momoa to lead movie adaptation of ‘Helldivers’ backed by PlayStation and Sony Pictures

Sony and PlayStation previously collaborated on the 2022 screen adaptation of the 'Uncharted' game, the series adaptation of 'Twisted Metal' for Peacock, and the 'Last of Us' series adaptation for HBO

Jason-Momoa

An action-adventure film based on the popular video game Helldivers has found its leading man. Jason Momoa will lead the movie backed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation. The makers have slated the film for release on November 10, 2027.

Justin Lin, known for directing some of the later Fast & Furious movies, is confirmed to direct the movie. The game centres on an elite group of soldiers, collectively called Helldivers, assembled to protect a fictional planet called Super Earth from dangerous alien creatures.

No details yet on whether the movie will follow any of the storylines from the game. Momoa is the only confirmed cast member yet.

Interestingly, it’s a reunion between Lin and Momoa, who previously worked together on Fast X. Lin was a co-writer and co-producer on the Fast & Furious entry.

Sony and PlayStation previously collaborated on the 2022 screen adaptation of the Uncharted game headlined by Tom Holland, the series adaptation of Twisted Metal for streaming giant Peacock, and the Last of Us series adaptation for HBO.

The Helldivers video game, released in 2015, has a sequel, Helldivers 2, which came out in 2024.

Momoa is no stranger to video game adaptations. His previous film, A Minecraft Movie, became a surprise box office hit, collecting over $950 million worldwide, despite lukewarm reviews. He is also playing the character Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter movie — the fourth live-action feature film in the movie franchise and a reboot.

Last seen alongside Dave Bautista in the buddy cop action comedy The Wrecking Crew and the Apple TV series Chief of War (which also marked his directorial debut), Momoa has his plate full.

His upcoming slate includes roles in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (as DC character Lobo) and Dune: Part Three (as Duncan Idaho).
