Popular Malayalam actor and producer Maniyanpilla Raju has been involved in an allegedly hit-and-run incident in which two bike occupants suffered serious injuries.

The incident occurred in Thiruvananthapuram's Vazhuthacaud in the premises of the Trivandrum Club, on Thursday night. Following this, the police have registered an FIR against Raju, who arrived at the Museum Police Station on Friday morning.

The injured have been identified as Thiruvananthapuram residents Sooraj, 20, and Nidev, 20. They have been admitted to the a private hospital. According to the police, Sooraj sustained fractures to his left leg and shoulder, while Nidev suffered injuries to his head and legs.

The police were able to ascertain that the vehicle, with registration number KL 01 CJ 0004 — the number plate was found dislodged at the site — belonged to Raju after checking registration records, which showed that the car belonged to a man named Sudheer Kumar Raju, which happens to be the actor's real name.

The police were earlier unable to locate Raju and his vehicle. He was neither reachable by phone. It was learnt that he had switched it off right after the incident. While addressing the press at the Museum police station, Raju claimed that it was the motorcycle that hit him, not the other way around, adding that the CCTV video of the accident would back up his statement.

The FIR said the car allegedly hit a Royal Enfield motorcycle carrying two youths, and that it was driven in a reckless manner without regard to public safety. It also stated that the driver fled the scene without providing assistance to the injured and didn’t inform the police or other authorities about the accident.

A case has been registered under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 134(A) and 134(B) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

In his statement to the press, Raju said he went home after the accident because he panicked and stated his reasons for not helping the injured. “I am a cancer survivor and am currently suffering from chikungunya. My wife was also alone at home. However, I informed others to help the injured,” he said.
