The Tamil Nadu box office has a surprise winner for this Pongal season. The underdog film, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, starring Jiiva is trending superbly in the state with collections increasing with each passing day. Having released in just 200 cinemas in TN, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil grossed a decent Rs 1.75 crore on its opening day but it doubled up on its second day.
Releasing on the main Pongal day definitely helped but what has followed is due to tremendous word-of-mouth with the second day's numbers touching Rs 3.50 crore in Tamil Nadu. Such is the jump in collections for Saturday that the advance booking alone is in the range of approximately Rs 1.80 crore.
Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is showing strong occupancy trends from the morning shows itself and it is expected to cross the Rs 4 crore mark in Tamil Nadu. In fact, there is an outside chance of the film touching the Rs 5 crore mark too. The extended four-day weekend is heading towards Rs 14-15 crore minimum, which is phenomenal for the scale of this film.

On Saturday (January 17) morning, BookMyShow reported a whopping 118,990 tickets sold in the previous 24 hours. With superstrong word-of-mouth, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is gaining increase in showcount and additional screens are also being added across this weekend. The early momentum hints at a first week figure of Rs 25 crore bare minimum in Tamil Nadu.
If the initial trends are anything to go by, Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil is drawing comparison to the 2025 blockbuster Tourist Family but that film eventually ended with more than Rs 60 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. If Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil reaches anywhere close to that figure, it will be a historic achievement, considering the competition on offer.
