The dust cleared after the bombs fell. Somewhere, the vaults are buried, only to open after the world outside is safer to walk. Randall Clark watches from the canyon caves above. Rob Co, headed by the mysterious Mr House, isolates itself in Las Vegas.
The world that we know, diverged from a point after World War II. In this alternate history, the world uses nuclear power to sustain all its energy needs, solidifying the American dream, bringing happiness to the world and advancing several fields of science. But behind it all, greed grew under the shadows of this dream — greed which later led to the bombs.
Now the echo of that dream is heard from the old-world radios still playing in the ruins of post-apocalyptic America.
Evolved from the ideas that satirise the tensions of the Cold War in the 50s and 60s, the creators of Fallout managed to create the most memorable, funny, and sometimes horrifying, role-playing games of the last decade. With its extensive lore, interactive choices, characters that help guide our choices (looking at you Mr House), and other wacky wild wasteland hijinks, the Fallout franchise is arguably the most well-known gaming franchise by role-playing enthusiasts.
Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game
When the water purification system of vault 13 is damaged and in need of repair, the Overseer, the leader of the vault, tasks the player to search for its components outside the vault. Trekking through the wasteland, encountering raiders, communities that survived, mutants, ghouls, giant Deathclaws and Radscorpions, you must find the chips before time runs out. Set in the style of a tabletop, it's known for its 2D animations, character dialogues and player choices.
Fallout 2: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game
Set almost 70 years after Fallout, the Chosen One must find the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), and fight the Enclave, a militaristic faction made up of the remnants of the United States.
Fallout 3
After the father of the Lone Wanderer leaves Vault 101, they must leave the comforts of their vault and trek the Capital wasteland, made up of the ruins of Washington, D.C. There they encounter the warring factions of the Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel, who are trying to find the G.E.C.K., something the Lone Wanderer’s father had been searching for.
Known for adding 3D elements and turning the game into a first-person person-shooter, it was lauded by critics for its innovative gameplay and humour.
Fallout: New Vegas
The player is a courier, who is shot in the head by Benny, a gangster who steals a package from them. They are miraculously saved and trek through the Mojave Desert, in search of Benny. From there, it's up to the player to ask questions or desire revenge, leading them to the charismatic, yet mysterious, Mr. House, and his city of New Vegas.
Known as the best game within the Fallout franchise, it was critically acclaimed for its extensive lore and branching storytelling, where the player's choices, unlike the good and bad karma system in Fallout 3, are more grey, leading to complex character choices.
The second season of the Fallout television series is set to premiere in December 2025.
