For over two weeks, Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón found herself in hot water after old posts resurfaced, showing her making insensitive Islamophobic, racist, and xenophobic comments. In addition, an old post revealed Gascón badmouthing her co-star, Selena Gomez, though she claimed it was fake.
Now, Gomez has broken her silence on the ongoing controversy. During the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday night, when the moderator asked how she was doing amid the drama, she replied, “I’m really good... Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just, I’m just grateful and live with no regrets.”
The actress also added, “And I would do this movie over and over again if I could,” which prompted the audience to erupt in cheers and applause.

Past tweets from the Gascón show her making insensitive and tone-deaf comments on China during COVID-19, George Floyd, Islam, and diversity at the 2021 Oscars. The 52-year-old has repeatedly apologised for the same.

Gascón is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez. She made history by being the first transgender woman to achieve this feat. Netflix, who is the distributor of the film in the USA, UK, and Canada, has now dropped Gascón from the Oscars campaign, which means that the streamer will no longer cover Gascón’s travel and accommodation expenses related to promoting the film or the award ceremonies for which it secured nominations.
Audiard has also expressed his disappointment in his lead star and has noticeably distanced himself from her, calling her actions “inexcusable”.
