It is a new year, and time to update your binge list for the weekend. Streaming platforms have lined up an interesting mix of movies and shows this week. Here's a quick look at what is arriving on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney plus Hotstar and more this week.

Uunchai: ZEE5

Release date: January 6

The adventure drama featuring an ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Danny Denzongpa, Neena Gupta and Parineeti Chopra, released in theatres in December. The film revolves around a heartwarming tale of friendship. Uunchai tracks the journey of three aged friends (Bachchan, Kher and Irani), who decide to embark on a trek to the Everest base camp to fulfill the wish of their late friend Bhupen (Denzongpa).

The Pale Blue Eye: Netflix

Release date: January 6

Set in New York in 1830, the mystery thriller revolves around a veteran detective who teams up with a young military cadet to investigate murders at the US Military Academy. Directed by Scott Cooper, the film is an adaptation of a novel by the same name. The film features Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Gillian Anderson among others.

Saudi Vellakka: SonyLIV

Tharun Moorthy's critically acclaimed Malayalam film Saudi Vellakka will arrive on the streaming platform after it was released in theatres in December. The film which was also screened at IFFI Goa 2022 had received rave reviews from critics and audiences as well. The court drama which highlights the issues the legal system in the country, features Lukman Lukku, Binu Pappu, Vincy Aloshious · Sujith Shanker, Devi Varma among others.

Mumbai Mafia: Police vs the Underworld – Netflix

Netflix continues its trend of true-crime documentaries with the latest one that tracks Dawood Ibrahim's reign of terror in Mumbai in the 90s. The show sheds light on the battle between the Mumbai Police and Dawood's D-company. “In 1990s Mumbai, a crime boss and his network wield unchecked power over the city — until the rise of "encounter cops," who brazenly kill their targets,” reads the streamer's description of the show directed by Raaghav Dar and Francis Longhurst.

Taaza Khabar: Disney plus Hotstar

YouTube star and comedian Bhuvan Bham's much-anticipated series revolves around a sanitation worker whose life turns around after he discovers magical powers. The comedy-drama is directed by Himank Gaur from a story penned by writer duo Hussain and Abbas Dalal. Taaza Khabar also stars Shriya Pilgaonkar, J D Chakravarthy, Deven Bhojani, Prathmesh Parab, Nitya Mathur, Shilpa Shukla and Mithilesh Chaturvedi.

Woman of the Dead: Netflix

Release date: January 5

The German-language thriller based on Bernhard Aichner’s bestselling novel revolves around a woman's vengeful quest to find out who killed her husband. In the process, her life turns upside down as she ends up exposing terrible secrets about her community. The six-part series is directed by Nicolai Rohde.
