Kollywood director Mani Ratnam, who is gearing up for the release of his multi-starrer magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 1said the politics and psychology of the movie and the book are still relevant in today's times.

Based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel, the Tamil historical drama chronicles the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, a powerful king of the south who went on to become the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I.

During a media interaction for the promotion of Ponniyin Selvan, Mani Ratnam was asked if his movie is relevant in today's times.

The director said history offers plenty of lessons. "I think everything comes from the past when the future comes. Especially this novel and this film, after thousand years, it will still be relevant; the politics of it is still relevant, the psychology of it is still relevant," he said.

The director also said it was his dream to direct Ponniyin Selvan for a long time, ever since he read the book. “It was so spectacular, as a wish, as a story, as an adventure and several people have tried to do this before and they have not been able to because of one reason, they wanted to leave it for me" he noted.

He said he is delighted to make the film at this time when there is so much technological improvements.

Ponniyin Selvan release date has been set for September 30. The movie stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jayaram, and Jayam Ravi.

Ponniyin Selvan songs have already been a rage, much before the release of the movie.
