On the latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati season 13, host Amitabh Bachchan shared the story behind his surname. The actor revealed he was a 'product of an inter-caste marriage'.

Bhagyashree Tayade, a contestant from Maharashtra was reunited with her father on the show years after her love marriage. She revealed that her family broke all ties with her and had not even seen her baby daughter. Acting as a mediator, Big B asked Bhagyashree to deliver a message to them and requested her father to put aside his resentment and revive their relationship.

Bachchan explained why this conversation was personal to him. He said: “I take this personally because I am a product of an inter-caste marriage too. My mother was from a Sikh family, and my father was from a Kayastha family in Uttar Pradesh. Their families opposed for a while, but they agreed and all the bonds were restored. I’m talking about the year 1942.”

He added: “My father deliberately gave us the name Bachchan, because the surname indicates caste. When I was about to get admitted to school, I was asked about my surname. Father and mother decided right then they wouldn’t give the surname of a caste, but would rather be the pseudonym of my father, his poet name, the name with which he used to write poems, it was to hide indication of my caste.”

Later in the show Big B called her father to mend their broken relationship. Bhagyashree shared her happiness and said she was forever grateful to KBC.

Apart from the KBC, Bachchan will be seen in several movies like Mayday, Jhund, Good Bye, Brahmastra, and The Intern remake.
