Lok Janshakti Party chief and Lok Sabha MP Chirag Paswan on Monday wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asking for probe into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He said “groupism” was the reason behind actor's suicide. This is the second letter Paswan has written, in a week, after writing to Bihar CM with a request for a thorough probe.

The actor's death has sparked off series of protests, and many senior leaders from all parties are demanding a probe into the incident, where professional rivalry is being talked about as a likely cause for the suicide. Senior BJP leaders including Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi and former Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari visited Sushant’s Patna house to pay their condolences to the actor’s family. Prasad is MP from Patna Sahib.

Rajput was one among prominent actors from Bihar who have made their mark in Bollywood. His death had caused outrage in the state as the charges of nepotism were made and the family demanded a CBI probe into the matter, a demand seconded by many leaders. Tiwari who visited the family on Monday also demanded a CBI probe.

The state which is already reeling under the spread of Covid-19 and massive reverse migration of workers, the actor's death came as a blow. People linked the incident to Bihari Asmita (regional pride), where a bright boy from the state was discriminated against in Mumbai where incidents of violence against Bihari workers had erupted in the past.

With elections due in October-November, Rajput's death has also caused the state politicians to demand justice for the family. The actor also belonged to the politically dominant Rajput upper caste, and to quell any likely anguish, the ruling coalition leaders have been sensitive to the issue. A community's collective anguish can prove costly during the election year.

The state also has a history where Bollywood actors with roots in the state have taken the political plunge, prominent names being Shatrughan Sinha, Manoj Tiwari, Prakash Jha, Shekhar Suman, and even Chirag Paswan. Rajput's death is unlikely to be relegated to the background anytime soon.
