Actress Amala Paul and director AL Vijay's divorce in 2017 had come as a shock to fans and those in the industry. The couple had tied the knot in 2014. In 2019 Vijay married Aishwarya, and Amala had taken to social media to wish the couple the best.

Earlier the filmmaker had claimed that Amala and he got separated due to 'trust issues'. Triggering fresh controversy in Kollywood, Vijay's father and film producer A.L. Alagappan has blamed Dhanush for Amala and his divorce. Speaking to an online channel, he said that though Amala had decided to stay away from films after marriage, Dhanush offered her a role in Amma Kanakku post marriage, and she accepted it.

When the couple got separated, Vijay had said that his family has never stood in the way of her career. In his statement, he said: "When Amala wanted to continue her career in films, I supported her. I was never a hindrance. The accusations that I or my family were stopping her from work are completely untrue. The base for any marital relationship is honesty and trust when that is breached the existence of committed relationship becomes pointless. I really value the institution of marriage and relationship a lot."

Vijay is currently busy with his highly anticipated multilingual project, Thalaivi—a biopic of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa, featuring Kangana Ranaut in the titular role.
