Two Indian films—Lijo Jose Pellissery's Jallikattu and Anand Narayan Mahadevan's Mai Ghat: Crime No. 103/2005—are the two Indian films competing for the coveted Golden Peacock at the International Film Festival of India, in Goa. They are up against 13 other movies from around the world.

This is the second time in a row that Pellissery is finding a spot in the competition category. Last year Pellissery bagged the Silver Peacock award for the best director at the festival for his movie Ee. Ma.Yau. Malayalam film Jallikattu is a disturbing take on the man vs beast subject, as a buffalo being readied for slaughter, runs amok and chaos ensues in a village in Kerala's Idukki district. The social drama was well received at its world premiere at the recently concluded Toronto International Film Festival.

Marathi film Mai Ghat: Crime No. 103/2005 was inspired by the story of a Kerala woman who fought and won a 13-year-long legal battle after her son’s death in police custody. It is based on Prabhavati Amma's journey to get justice for her son Udayakumar who died in police custody in 2005. In July last year, the court found two cops guilty and, in a first, sentenced both the serving policemen to death. Mai Ghat is a fictionalised take on the real- life incident and is set in a village in Maharashtra.

This year marks the 50th edition of IFFI.
