ITR filing deadline: Solving portal glitches to checking refund status, all you need to know

The process refund can take from a week to four months after the e-verification

The Income Tax department revealed that more than 6.13 crore income tax returns were filed for FY 2022-23 as of July 30 and some of them have already received their refunds. Many taxpayers complained of glitches in the income tax portal on July 31, the final day to file ITR.

“Kind Attention…A new milestone! More than 6 crore ITRs have been filed so far (30th July) of which about 26.76 lakh have been filed today till 6:30 pm! We have witnessed more than 1.30 crore successful logins on the e-filing portal today,” the IT department said in a tweet.

“To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & social media. We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven't filed ITR for AY 2023-24, to file their ITR at the earliest to avoid last minute rush,” it added.

Will the deadline be extended?

The last day to file your income tax returns is July 31. The government has not announced any deadline extension so far. If you have not filed your IT returns, you have to pay a late fee.

What to do if IT portal is not working?

If you are facing any issue with the income tax portal, you can retry after clearing the browser cache. If the problem persists, you can mail the Income Tax Department on orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in with your PAN, registered mobile number and screenshot of the error.

How much is the late fee?

If your total income is less than the basic exemption limit, you don't have to pay a late fee for filing between August 1 and December 31. However, if your income is doesn't exceed Rs 5 lakh, you have to pay a penalty of Rs 1,000. Those with income above Rs 5 lakh have to pay a late fee of Rs 5,000.

If you file your returns after December 31, the fine will be increased to Rs 10,000.

How to check refund status?

  • Go to the official income tax e-filing portal.

  • Log in with user ID, password and captcha

  • Go to My Account section

  • Click on Refund/Demand Status to find out your refund status, reason for refund failure etc.

How is the refund paid?

If you are eligible for a refund, it will be credited directly to your bank account or you will be issued a refund cheque as per the option selected by you at the time of filing the returns. The process can take from a week to four months after the e-verification.
