FedEx announces Indian-born Raj Subramaniam as new CEO

Subramaniam replaces founder Frederick Smith, who will step down on June 1

American courier delivery company FedEx has announced Indian-born Rajesh Subramaniam as its new CEO from June 1. He joins a growing list of Indian-origin executives to head multinational giants. 

Subramaniam will replace chairman and current CEO Frederick W. Smith, who will step down serve as the company's executive chairman.

"As we look toward what's next, I have a great sense of satisfaction that a leader of the calibre of Raj Subramaniam will take FedEx into a very successful future," Smith said in a statement.

Subramaniam, 56, currently serves as the company's president and chief operating officer. He will continue to serve as a director on the FedEx board to which he was elected in 2020.

He joined the company in 1991 and went on to become its chief marketing and communications officer. He also served as the top executive of FedEx Express. He was appointed as president and COO in 2019.

Subramaniam is from Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from IIT Bombay, a master's degree in the same field from Syracuse University, New York, and an MBA from the University of Texax. 

“It has been the greatest privilege of my career to work for Fred and learn from one of the most brilliant business minds of our lifetime. It is an honour to be selected as his successor as CEO of FedEx,” Subramaniam said in a LinkedIn post.

FedEx, which currently has over 6 lakh employees around the globe, was founded by Smith in 1971, delivering small parcels and documents.
