Income Tax officials on Thursday conducted raids at the residences and offices of Haryana independent MLA Balraj Kundu at Rohtak and Gurugram. A team of about 100 officials were searching Kundu's residences in sector 14, Rohtak, Gurugram, his in-laws house in Hisar's Hansi, his two brothers’ houses in Rohtak and over 30 other premises of his close aides and relatives, Hindustan Times reported.

Kundu, an independent MLA from Meham in Rohtak, has been a vocal opponent of the BJP-led government in Haryana. Kundu was earlier with BJP but had turned rebel when the saffron party did not field him from Meham constituency of Rohtak district in the 2019 Assembly polls. Then Kundu resigned from the post of Rohtak Zila Parishad chairman and won the assembly election as an independent candidate from Meham.

However, after the BJP fell short of majority in Haryana, Kundu extended support to the BJP-JJP government. However, he later withdrew the support from the government, accusing former minister of state for cooperatives, Manish Grover, of indulging in corrupt activities and Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar of not initiating a probe against Grover. He has been targeting Khattar on several issues.

After his withdrawal of support, two FIRs have been lodged against Kundu. He has also been actively supporting the farmers’ agitation.

Reportedly, Kundu started a Rasoi at Tikri border for protesting farmers against the three contentious farm laws and has been taking part in Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait’s mahapanchayats in Haryana.
