The Delhi airport is likely to get an 'air train' by 2022 for seamless movement of passengers between terminals, a source privy to the development said. "By the time the current phase of expansion is over by 2022, Delhi airport will become quite big with annual passenger handling capacity reaching 10 crore. Therefore, an air train is being considered right now to be built by 2022," said a source privy to the development.
According to media reports, a Singapore-based consultant to examine other options too, including tram, to ensure the most cost-effective automated passenger mover (APM) between T1, T3 and places such as cargo and Aerocity. "The cost is likely to be Rs 2,000-2,500 crore. We are seeing if it can be ready along with the current expansion work in T1 and the fourth runway,” TOI reported citing a senior official.

Currently, passengers at Delhi airport move from one terminal to another using shuttle bus service. Prominent airports such as New York’s JFK or Singapore’s Changi provide air train services to ease passenger movement. However, unlike the JFK or Changi airports, the Indira Gandhi International Airport's APM will be located at walking distance from the terminals.
This is not the first time the Delhi airport was mulling to include air trains. The air train project was first announced in 2016, but got delayed over funding.
