With India having promised an ambitious Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) towards climate change mitigation, it has realised that there will be growing requirement for skilled hands in the green tech sector. A recent MoU between environment and skill development ministries intends to start with training one lakh refrigeration and air conditioning technicians on checking the emission of harmful green house gases. Freon and other gases which are used in refrigeration are known to add to climate change.

The environment ministry, had, a few months earlier, launched the Green Skill Mission under which, it hopes to impart training to nearly six lakh people. Environment minister Dr Harshavardhan also said that the ministry of science and technology will also draw up courses to provide green skill development to scientists and technicians.

The first course in green skill development was conducted earlier this year for training biodiversity conservationists and para taxonomists; both curses were of three months each. They were done on a pilot basis, with around 250 trainees. These candidates can get employment in zoological parks and bioresources, wildlife crime control, eco-tourism and even organic agriculture.

Among the other ongoing green skill development courses are on waste management (Chennai) technical and laboratory assistants for energy efficiency and star labelling (Ahmedabad), river dolphin conservation (Patna), water budgeting and auditing (Patna) and wild bee keeping (Guwahati).
