The Centre has stepped in to handle the crisis in Jammu and Kashmir with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh calling a day-long meet to discuss security and development related issues in Kashmir.

Apart from officials from the state, representatives of at least 15 Central government ministries will be present in the meet which will discuss issues that demand immediate attention in the state, including the total disarray in administration and benefits of government schemes not reaching the public.

According to sources, issues related to security, local administration and Central schemes will be discussed in the meeting at North Block. The thrust will be on fast tracking the Central schemes, outreach to the local population and taking initiatives to stop the alienation among the people.

Importantly, along with administrative concerns, issues like water sharing with Pakistan are also expected to come up for discussion. Shared Water resources have been a key issue in the fraught Indo-Pak relations. The 56-yea-old Indus Water Treaty lays down how the two countries should share the Indus River and its tributaries. The Indian government is also looking at construction of hydropower plants along the western rivers, which has become a matter of concern for Pakistan.
