The Ministry of Human Resource and Development released on Monday the first survey report from National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for higher education institutions. The government-sponsored survey has ranked about 3,500 institutions in six categories.
The first three rankings are dominated by Indian Institute Of Technology, Madras, followed by IIT, Bombay and IIT, Kharagpur in that order in the engineering category. The Indian Institute of Delhi and Kanpur are holding fourth and fifth position in the ranking list respectively.
In the management category, IIMs have dominated the first six ranks. Indian Institute Of Management, Bangaluru has topped the list, followed by IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kozhikode in that order.
In the university category, Indian Institute Of Science Banglore has topped the list, Institute Of Chemical Technology is at number 2. The Jawaharlal Nehru University and University Of Hyderabad, which were at the heart of nationalism debate have been ranked third and fourth respectively.
In pharmacy category, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MCOPS) Manipal has taken the number 1 spot, while University Institute of Pharma Sciences (UIPS) Chandigarh and Jamia Hamdard New Delhi have been ranked second and third place respectively. Poona College Of Pharmacy, Erandwane, Pune, Institute Of Pharmacy, Nirma University have secured fourth and fifth places respectively.

“#IndiaRankings2016 objectives is to Sensitise educational institutes, Empower students and parents, Data processing and verification process,”she wrote on her Twitter account.
“#IndiaRankings2016 allows parents and students to check the quality of the institution of their interest and make informed choices,” she said, adding that it “allows healthy competition between the higher educational institutions and the student benefit in the process.”
The NIRF was formed by HRD Ministry on September 29, 2015 to ingeniously evaluate and rank higher education institutions.
