Lakhimpur Kheri (UP), Nov 7 (PTI) A comprehensive health check up of all 25 elephants of an elephant conservation hub at Dudhwa Tiger Reserve was conducted during a two-day special health camp, officials said.
A group of eminent scientists, veterinary doctors and wildlife experts took part in the camp held at the Salukapur Elephant Camp at the tiger reserve on November 4-5 to assess the health of 25 government-owned elephants and strengthen their medical care.
Dudhwa deputy director Jagdish R, who hosted and coordinated the health check up operations, said that among the 25 camp elephants, 23 underwent examinations at the Salukapur base camp, while the remaining two were examined at the Dudhwa tourism complex.
On Wednesday, the experts assessed the physical health of the elephants, observed their habits and examined them while on Thursday, dung samples were collected to detect any possible infections and other health concerns, he added.
The experts provided suggestions to keep the elephants fit and healthy.
The deputy director said that experts also interacted with mahouts and caretakers to understand the animals' diet, behaviour and daily routines, offering medical advice and guidance on treatment.
He also said that regular health monitoring was vital as the elephants play a key role in patrolling, rhino monitoring and wildlife rescue operations.
